American Chemical Society Honors Dr. Redden

Patricia Ann Redden, Ph.D., professor and chairperson of the Department of Chemistry was recently honored by the American Chemical Society (ACS) as part of the 2011 class of ACS Fellows, an honor bestowed upon 213 distinguished scientists who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in chemistry and made important contributions to ACS, the world’s largest scientific society. The 2011 Fellows were recognized at an induction ceremony on Aug. 29 during the Society’s 242nd National Meeting & Exposition in Denver.

“ACS is especially proud to honor these chemists during the 2011 International Year of Chemistry,” said ACS President Nancy B. Jackson, Ph.D. “The work they are doing will improve all of our lives as they unleash the power of chemistry to solve global challenges like providing clean water, sufficient food, new energy sources and cures for disease. But that’s not all. They’re also organizing scientific conferences for their peers, doing outreach with scouts and schools, and being mentors to the next generation of scientists.”

Contract Extension for Basketball Coach John Dunne

Big news for fans of the Peacocks! After Head Men’s Basketball Coach John Dunne led the Peacocks to an incredible 2010-2011 season, resulting in their first MAAC Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance since 1995 and their first 20-win season since 1990-91, Saint Peter’s College has announced that Dunne has received a contract extension through the 2015-16 season.

Foreign Language Research and Teaching Press of Beijing Visits O'Toole Library

A delegation of representatives from the Foreign Language Research and Teaching Press of Beijing, China, visited Saint Peter's College on Tuesday, May 17 to discuss the teaching of Chinese in the United States and here at the College. The delegation was met by Lan Jiang, Ph.D., adjunct professor of Chinese, Rev. Mark DeStephano, S.J., chairman of the department of modern & classical languages and literatures, and David Ornstein, Ph.D., director of the O'Toole Library. Dr. Ornstein spoke to the group about the innovations that have been made in the College's library, giving particular attention to new research and archival facilities, as well as about the opportunities available to conducting research online.

The delegation made a donation to the College library through a variety of Chinese-language teaching materials, including books and computer programs, which will be incorporated both into the book collection and the data section of the new language laboratory that is being constructed through the College's Title V grant. The College's relationship with the Foreign Language Research and Teaching Press will be ongoing, as part of the expansion of the Asian Studies program.

CMST Travels to Paris for Workshop on Microplasmas

Members of the Center for Microplasma Science and Technology (CMST) team as well as undergraduate and graduate students recently attended the 6th International Workshop on Microplasmas, which was held in Paris from April 3-6.

The seven CMST staff members included Jose L. Lopez, Ph.D., assistant professor of physics and director and principal investigator, Wei-Dong Zhu, Ph.D., assistant professor of physics and director of research and co-principal investigator, Rev. Daniel O’Brien, S.J., director of educational outreach, Valencia Johnson, Ph.D., senior research scientist, Jenny M. Mahoney, Ph.D., senior research scientist, Alfred Freilich, Ph.D., senior research scientist, and David Jacome ’10, research technician and visiting graduate student from Stevens Institute of Technology.

In addition to Jacome, students that attended were Danny Palacios ‘14, Justin Lo Re ’11 and Rachel (Ruixue) Wang, a visiting graduate student from Polytechnic Institute of New York University and a graduate student in the Academy for Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies at Peking University in China. In total, CMST presented nine posters and hosted one discussion.

Dr. Lopez presented a poster titled “Effects of hydrocarbon contamination on DBD ozone generators.”

Dr. Zhu hosted a discussion titled “Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jet Matrix” and presented a poster titled “Treatment of Candida biofilms using a direct-current, atmospheric-pressure, cold plasma microjet.” The poster was jointly presented with the Academy for Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies at Peking University and Polytechnic Institute of New York University.

Fr. O’Brien presented a poster titled “Engaging students through education and research in microplasmas.”

Dr. Johnson presented two posters titled “A study of the potential of cathode boundary layer discharge (CBLD) devices with various cathode materials” and “Low temperature atmospheric pressure helium plasma jet in flexible tubings.”

Dr. Mahoney presented a poster titled “Electrical and optical emission measurements of a capillary-DBD in atmospheric air and argon.”

Wang presented a poster titled “Effect of an atmospheric pressure non-thermal plasma on tooth root canal, dentinal tubules infection and re-infection prevention.” This poster was jointly presented with the Academy for Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies at Peking University and Polytechnic Institute of New York University.

Jacome presented a poster titled “Characterization of the Capillary Plasma Electrode (CPE) discharge.”

Lo Re presented a poster titled “Characterization of a DC-Driven, Atmospheric-pressure, Non-thermal He/O2 Plasma Microjet.”

Palacios presented a poster titled “Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) emission from a fast-pulsed dielectric barrier discharge in argon.”

SPC Wins Society of Physics Students Outstanding Chapter Award!

The Saint Peter's College chapter of the Society of Physics Students (SPS), with the support of Jose Lopez, Ph.D., and Wei-Dong Zhu, Ph.D., assistant professors of physics, received the national SPS Outstanding Chapter Award recognition in the Zone 3 area, which is represented by many top universities such as Princeton University and the University of Pennsylvania.

The Society of Physics Students is a professional association explicitly designed for students. Membership, through collegiate chapters, is open to anyone interested in physics.

SPS Outstanding Chapters are determined after a careful review of the information, photos and supporting material presented in the annual Chapter Reports. The reviewers include the Zone Councilor, the Associate Zone Councilor, and often, a third reviewer from outside the zone, as well as the SPS office staff.

The criteria for deciding the Outstanding Chapters in each zone include:

The chapter's involvement in local, zone and national SPS meetings and other professional meetings
Participation in SPS programs
Outreach efforts to the grades K-12 or the general public
Participation in community service
Contributions to student recruitment and retention
Participation in social events
Interactions with the department's alumni

Six Iconic Crimes: Violence through the Decades and War in Print

From April 4-30, the O'Toole Library offers a special exhibit: "Six Iconic Crimes: Violence through the Decades and War in Print: Books and Images from the O'Toole Library Collection." Today, Dr. Hopkins will be awarded the NJ section of the Mathmetical Association of America teaching award at the Spring 2011 MAA-NJ Meeting and 8th Garden State Undergraduate Mathematics Conference (GSUMC). WSPC Radio Wins Three Awards at IBS 2011 NYC Conference

From March 11-13, WSPC Radio participated in the 71st Annual Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Radio and Webcasting Conference in New York City. On Saturday, March 12, the "Academy Awards"of college radio were presented with WSPC Radio capturing two coveted trophies: one for Best Campus News Coverage to Johnette Figueroa and Rozlyn Smith and another for Best Talk Program to Stephanie Danis and Sushanta Mozumder. WSPC Radio was nominated as a finalist in three other categories: Most Creative Show, Best Station Contest/Promotional Event and Best Podcast. Certificates were awarded for each. In addition, WSPC Radio was presented with the highest award for Station Operations, The Platinum Mic Award. In all, there were 29 award categories from hundreds of submissions from the more than one thousand college and university IBS member stations from coast-to-coast.

WSPC Radio-TV General Manager and Adjunct Professor of Communications Joe Lamachia accompanied student staff members and also was invited by IBS Chairman Len Mailloux of Simmons College in Boston to be a moderator for panels on "Writing," "Commercials and Advertising," "Jazz Programming," "An Audience with the Pros: On-Air Personalities," "Faculty Advisors and General Managers" and "Playing the Voice-Over Game."

The WSPC radio team’s dedication and professionalism paid off against some very stiff competition such as DePaul University, Point Park University, SUNY Fredonia and Stony Brook, William Paterson University, Goshen College, Central Methodist University, Mt. The Ignatian Examen

Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, knew that the body, mind and spirit could be uniquely nourished in educational institutions. A critical component of his spirutality was a type of prayer simply called the Daily Examen or the Ignatian Examen. The basic idea is to take a close look at one's day - the triumphs and trials, the good and the bad, and see where God fits in. Saint Peter's Peacocks in the NCAA Tournament!

The #14 Saint Peter's College Peacocks (20-13) are set to take on the #3 Purdue University Boilermakers (25-7) in a Southwest Region Second Round Game in the 2011 NCAA Championship. The Peacocks are coming in off a MAAC Championship and three straight victories, while the Boilermakers lost its last two contests, including a quarterfinal game in the Big Ten Tournament. Tonight's game is being broadcast live on TNT with a 7:20 EST tip-off from the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. You can also listen to the game on the Westwood One Radio Network (Check your local listings) and on Sirius Channel 127 and XM Channel 242.

On campus, the Office of Student Activities is hosting a viewing party beginning at 6:30 p.m. in McIntyre Lounge. Pizza and snacks will be served. Admission is free. Fun, family-friendly atmosphere with a giant inflatable basketball toss, contests and prizes throughout the game!

Around the world, many Christians celebrate the beginning of Lent today on Ash Wednesday. Lent is a season of fasting, almsgiving and repentence before the joyous celebration of Easter. The day acquired the name of Ash Wednesday due to the ashes placed on the foreheads of worshippers. As ashes are imposed on a person's forehead, the person administering the ashes repeats one of the following prayers:

Remember that you are dust, and unto dust you shall return.
—Genesis 3:19
Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel.
—Mark 1:15
Repent, and hear the good news.
—Mark 1:15

Anyone may receive ashes in a Roman Catholic Church. Similarly, many other Christian denominations also allow ashes to be received by anyone. Catholics (and many other Christians) follow rules of fasting that include abstaining from meat and only partaking in one full meal and two smaller meals.

Peacocks Advance to MAAC Championships!

Big news from Saint Peter's College! The #4 Saint Peter’s College Peacocks (19-13) used an 18-1 run to end the first half and held off the #1 Fairfield University Stags (24-7) in the second half to come away with a 62-48 victory and advance to the Championship Game of the 2011 Spark Energy MAAC Basketball Championships. This will be the Peacocks seventh appearance in the Championship Game and their first since 2006. They will face Iona in tomorrow’s game at 7:00 p.m.

“I’m really proud of our effort. Just to come in and have the confidence that we did after losing to them 12 straight times,” said Saint Peter’s Head Coach John Dunne. “They weren’t playing their best and we capitalized on that in the first half. In the second half we certainly had a let down emotionally and they were real fired up. We knew they were going to make a run. It was really tight and fortunately we were able to hit a couple of key baskets and make our free throws down the stretch.”

Alumni Win the Snow Bowl

The Ghosts of SPC flag football team, representing the Saint Peter's College Recreation Department, won the co-ed division of the 2011 New York Giants Snow Bowl charity flag football tournament held in the New Meadowlands Stadium on Saturday, February 19.

The Ghosts of SPC, comprised of College staff and alumni who participated as part of a service project to raise funds for the Special Olympics of New Jersey, were undefeated in the tournament, amassing a perfect 5-0 record on the way to the championship. Their victories included an exciting sudden death overtime win in the semi-finals.

The team was comprised of recreation administrators/grads Dave Bryngil and Patty Gentile, alumni Melissa Neglia, Pamela DeLuca, Erin Archer, Richard George, Mike Iurato, Ryan Jasinski, Harold Gold, Gary Gentile, and Terrence Bayne, husband of Claudia Pope-Bayne of the Office of Advancement and External Affairs. With the exception of Bayne (a fellow Jesuit product who attended Scranton University) all of The Ghosts had played for the Saint Peter's College flag football team during their days as students.

As a team, the group raised a total of $2775.00 for Special Olympics of New Jersey. This was the eleventh highest team total among the 71 teams entered in the various divisions of the Snow Bowl tournament. Overall the Snow Bowl helped raise approximately $200,000.00 for the Special Olympics of New Jersey, including generous corporate donations from the New York Football Giants and Wyndham Hotels.

Women's Indoor Track & Field - MAAC Champions!!

Ronnah Parham broke the MAAC 55-meter hurdles record as the Peahens Track & Field team took home first place at the 2011 MAAC Indoor Track and Field Championship. Recently, a digital audio productions class visited 1010 WINS Radio in Manhattan. David Plotkin, director of production for 1010 WINS, provided commentary on how digital audio production enhances the effectiveness and immediacy of the 1010 WINS radio operation. Students received a tour of the newsroom, the commercial production area, the terrestrial transmission and internet streaming nerve center for all CBS-owned radio stations in NYC and the live on-air studio. The students then had the opportunity for a thorough question and answer session before listening to examples of commercials and promos and learning how they were developed and produced.

Dr. Leonard J. Sciorra, Ph.D., The Joseph E. Schuh, S.J., Professor of Health & Natural Sciences and chair of the Department of Applied Science and Technology, has been working on some amazing technology at the College. He and a group of undergraduate students have developed a cell culturing process that could have far-reaching medical implications - right in Gannon Hall.

A few years ago, Charles Vickers '47 decided to direct his philanthropy toward this emerging tissue culture work at Saint Peter’s College. His support named the Charles J. Vickers ’47 and Anne B. Vickers Tissue Culture Facility and helped to make possible and sustain Dr. Sciorra's work, which is likely to result in the first patent in the College’s history.

Mr. Vickers has decided to renew his investment in the tissue culture project by issuing the Vickers Challenge to fellow members of the College’s medical, health and science community. Mr. Vickers will match every dollar raised up to $100,000 between now and December 31, 2010. All gifts will be 100% tax deductible and can be made as multi-year pledges. Donations can be made online for this and many other College initiatives.

Last night, more than 60 Saint Peter’s College students gathered in Saint Peter Chapel to worship together on the second Sunday of Advent. With rapidly dropping temperatures outside, the choir was ready to warm up the chapel with song. Two students received blessings from the community as new liturgical ministers. One will be a lector, which means sharing in the ministry of proclaiming the first or second readings, and the other will be a Eucharistic minister, which means assisting during distribution of Communion when necessary.

Fr. Ralph Rivera, S.J., from the Xavier Jesuit Community, traveled from Manhattan to celebrate Mass. Fr. Rivera is a long-time friend of Saint Peter’s, having taught philosophy at the College during the regency period of his formation. His homily reminded listeners of the special sense of time (kairos) represented by Jesus’ coming at Christmas and how different it is from the chronological (chronos) way time is usually perceived.

Before Mass concluded, Fr. Rivera and Fr. Rocco Danzi, S.J., chaplain for Saint Peter’s, raised their hands to offer a blessing of the intellect for all of the students. Classes conclude this week, and exams begin on Friday. Students and staff from Saint Peter’s Campus Ministry generously prepared treat bags for everyone, filled with snacks and with a prayer attached to them for the students to use for exams.

College Community Donors Appreciation Luncheon

For the first time, colleagues from vastly different departments of the College were gathered together to celebrate one specific thing they have in common: their choice to be donors to the College. Earlier this week, Eugene Cornacchia, Ph.D., president of Saint Peter’s College, welcomed members of the faculty and staff to the inaugural College Community Donors Appreciation Luncheon. He shared that Saint Peter’s received a significant increase both in the dollar amount contributed by the College community as well as the number of people who gave. The lunch offered a chance to recognize that to the faculty, staff and administration, Saint Peter’s means so much more than simply a place of employment. To many people working on campus, Saint Peter’s represents a chance to give back and help others on their way to successful careers.

The first Sunday of Advent signals the start of Christmas preparations and the beginning of a new liturgical year for Catholics and much of western Christianity. During this time when people may be caught up in the secular aspects of Christmas, the lectionary reminds us to focus on preparing our hearts to welcome the birth of Jesus Christ. At a college, Advent also signals to the students and faculty that the end of the semester is approaching. The library seems to be a very popular spot at this time of year, but the beautiful Advent wreath in Saint Peter Chapel (photo) certainly makes the chapel a wonderful place to reflect.

Each year, David S. Surrey, Ph.D., professor and chairman of Saint Peter’s College Sociology and Urban Studies Department, opens up his home in Montclair, N.J. to members of the College community to join him and his family and friends as they celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday. With the help of multiple individuals and departments, the holiday promises to be a warm and memorable experience for those who attend. In some cases, Dr. Surrey’s celebration introduces students from all over the world to the annual American custom of giving thanks.

Now in its 26th year, Dr. Surrey anticipates approximately 40-50 guests this Thursday. In addition to members of the Saint Peter’s community, several graduate students from The City University of New York (CUNY), where Dr. Surrey’s partner Michelle Fine teaches, will also attend. Some of those who attend come to Saint Peter’s from as far as Nepal and Bulgaria, but several students from as close as Newark, Montclair and West Orange are expected, as well as Saint Peter’s College alumni. Everyone in attendance is given the opportunity to share their own holiday traditions with each other and form relationships that carry over beyond Thanksgiving Day.

Members of the Saint Peter’s community contribute food, even when they do not come for the holiday, and the Department of Athletics, Campus Safety and Student Affairs, also help by lending vans for transportation between the Jersey City campus and his home.

Dr. Surrey continues to open his home partially because it is a long tradition in his own family. His father taught at a small college in Missouri, and they opened up their home on many occasions to students who had no place to go, including on Thanksgiving. Most of all, it is consistent with Saint Peter’s commitment to the Jesuit practice of being men and women for others.

Have you ever wondered what zero gravity is like? Is it true that everything just floats? This past summer, through the Saint Peter's College Practical Applications for Research in Science Education (PARSE) Institute, Jose Lopez, Ph.D., and Jim Clayton, Ed.D. '71 led a group of high school teachers on an exciting educational project culminating in a space flight on NASA's "Weightless Wonder." With an online video, you can get a real view of traveling in zero gravity. The group was composed of participants in the PARSE Institute Summer 2010 program, which is a paid, four-week institute for science teachers. The program consists of one week of instructional theory followed by two weeks of laboratory instruction and then a final week of lesson planning. The goal is for science teachers to experience a research laboratory and then develop concrete lesson plans ready to share with their students during the following school year. Interfaith Field Trip Experience

The Saint Peter's College Department of Theology teamed up with Campus Ministry to create a joint project for students in first theology studies. The students are invited to learn about different religions by actually going to places like the Islamic Center of Jersey City or the United Synagogue of Hoboken, and not simply learning through classroom experiences. More than 80 members of the Saint Peter’s College community recently participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. The group raised and donated over $2000 to fund cancer research. The CROP Walk will begin at 8:30 a.m.with registration in McIntyre Lounge. The CROP Walk is a walk to raise money to end poverty and hunger. The Ethics of Nursing and Health Care: A Legacy and A Vision

Dr. Amy Haddad, a well-known speaker, author and professor of ethics, will offer lectures on both campuses of Saint Peter's. Dr. Haddad's recent book, Nursing and Health Care Ethics: A Legacy and A Vision, outlines the history and future of ethics in nursing. She is the director of the Center for Health Policy at Creighton University and focuses her research on teaching and learning in ethics education. Modern Immigration

Amy Gottlieb, an immigration lawyer, adjunct faculty member at Rutgers Law School – Newark and program director of the American Friends Service Committee Immigrant Rights Program in Newark, will present on modern immigration in the United States. Freshmen are required to attend, but anyone interested may join as well. The presentation will include a lecture and discussion. This lecture is part of the Common Reading Program, a program designed to help foster community among first year students, promote shared values, and a create a sense of academic rigor. This year’s book selection is Crossing into America: the New Literature of Immigration, a collection of works edited by Louis Mendoza and Subramanian Shankar. Ms. Gottlieb's event is the first in a series of activities that will serve to connect faculty and student affairs personnel by enhancing the classroom experience with co-curricular activities. The lecture and discussion will be held Wednesday, October 6, 2010, from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. in the Yanitelli Recreational Life Center.

Economics of Immigration

The Guarini Institute for Governmental Affairs hosted its first lecture of the year on September 30 with economics and social policy expert George Borjas, Ph.D., an alumnus from the class of 1971. Dr. Borjas provided a summary of recent research on the economics of immigration and the implications for the future of United States immigration policy. He is the author of Wage Policy in the Federal Bureaucracy; Friends or Strangers: The Impact of Immigrants on the U.S. Economy; Heaven’s Door: Immigration Policy and the American Economy; and the textbook, Labor Economics. Prior to joining the faculty at The John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, Borjas was a professor of economics at the University of California, San Diego.

Established in 1994 by former New Jersey Congressman Frank Guarini, the Guarini Institute for Governmental Affairs aims to provide a non-partisan forum for discussion of key public policy issues among Saint Peter’s students. The Institute sponsors lectures and programs throughout the academic year to raise awareness, promote critical thinking, debate and encourage careers in public service. These lectures are an important part of intellectual debate and discussion at the College.

Jersey City Artists Studio Tour

Beatrice M. Mady, M.F.A, associate professor of fine arts and graphic arts coordinator at Saint Peter's College, will be featured in this weekend's Jersey City Artists Studio Tour. This year's 20th anniversary event features hundreds of artists. Maps are available in the Hudson Reporter, and will also be available at tour tents at Grove Street and Journal Square PATH trains on Saturday and Sunday. The kick-off party will be Friday, October 1, from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m., at Grace Church (39 Erie Street). The closing celebration will be on Sunday, October 3, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., at Parlay Studios (161 2nd Street).

Living the Legacy

On September 22, 1965, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. addressed a crowd of approximately 500 people at the College's Michaelmas Convocation, an annual ceremony that recognizes Saint Peter's College students for outstanding academic achievement. During his visit to the Jersey City campus, Dr. King was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws and Letters degree, the first offered by a Jesuit college or university.

According to an account in the school newspaper, Dr. King spoke against segregation and violence, and despite setbacks in the civil rights movement, King expressed optimism. "Although some will be scared, lose jobs and be called bad names, our problems will be solved," King said. "We shall overcome."

This special video was created collaboratively by Wilton Fontenette, manager of prospect research at Saint Peter's College, and her husband, George Fontenette. It features archival photos of Dr. King's appearance, beautiful music and information about his message. The video debuted as part of several events commemorating Dr. King's visit to Saint Peter's. Many students, staff, faculty and friends contributed to the success of the day's events. Keynote speaker Raymond Brown, Esq., delivered an educational presentation, sharing personal family stories about the civil rights movement, the history of Jersey City and the changes at Saint Peter's College over the past decades. The chorale and vocal performances were absolutely inspiring and left the audience hoping for an encore later this year. Students spent their lunch breaks in a popular campus café watching videos of Dr. King's speeches on a large projection screen. All around the campus, signs were posted letting the community know where the different activities were scheduled. Volunteer Fair - 9/23/10

As a Jesuit college, Saint Peter's strongly encourages all community members to understand and support the Jesuit ideal of being a man or woman for others. Students benefit a great deal from being active in their communities, often learning skills that make them more marketable in the workforce after graduation. The annual volunteer fair helps students who are interested in volunteering to find a site to work at during the year. Over 20 local service agencies will be in attendance, including the Elizabeth Coalition to House the Homeless, the Gloria Robinson Housing Project, Citizen Schools, Liberty Science Center and Christ Hospital. It will be held in the McIntyre Lounge on Thursday, September 23, 2010, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Senator and Legislators Gather for the CMST

Today's official opening for the Center for Microplasma Science and Technology included remarks by Senator Robert Menendez, an alumnus from the class of 1976. He commented,“I’m proud to return to my alma mater for such an auspicious occasion. The Center will be at the cutting edge of building technologies for another great American century. This is an investment in the future, and Saint Peter’s will stand at the center of this unique, national mission.”

Official Opening of the CMST

Tomorrow is a big day for Saint Peter's! It's the official opening for the Center for Microplasma Science & Technology. The CMST is is a designated Center of Excellence (CoE) and the National Laboratory for Advanced Research and Development in Microplasmas. The CMST was founded in 2009 through Department of Defense (DoD) funding from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) to serve as the United States of America's first and only scientific and educational center devoted entirely to the emerging field of microplasmas.The celebration begins at 9:30 a.m., and will include remarks from Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., president of Saint Peter’s College, and welcome Senator Robert Menendez, Congressmen Steve Rothman and Albio Sires, Mayor of Jersey City Jerramiah T. Healy and Dr. John W. Luginsland, program manager of the Plasma and Electro-Energetic Physics program of the Department of Defense’s Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR). Englewood Cliffs Campus Hosts Joey Travolta Film Camp

The Joey Travolta Short Film Camp will be hosted by Saint Peter’s College at its Englewood Cliffs Campus from Monday, August 2 to Thursday, August 12, 2010. Joey Travolta, an actor, producer, director, writer and teacher, will provide 50 campers with the opportunity to learn the art of filmmaking alongside his professional crew. Camp participants, ages 9 to 23, will create a 30 minute short film and public service announcement for the State of New Jersey and elsewhere about autism awareness. Read more.

A recent article shares a wonderful story about the current recipient and the creation of the Michael S. Azarow '76 Memorial Scholarship. When choosing how to commemorate Michael, the Azarow family was motivated by the actions of Fr. Yanitelli, who was serving as president at the College while Michael was a student, and his aspiration to bring together a culturally rich group of students. The Azarow family was honored that a Jewish student would receive such a prestigious honor from a college that educated primarily Catholic students.

Now through August 20, 2010, an exhibit at The Distillery features the work of Beatrice M. Mady, artist and associate professor of fine arts at Saint Peter's College. The Distillery is located at 7 Hutton Street in Jersey City, N.J. The gallery is approximately a 15-minute walk for the Journal Square PATH station. There is parking on the street. The exhibit, "Introducing the Heights," highlights local artists and their connection to life in Jersey City. Annual Fund Surpasses $2 Million!

For the first time since the fiscal year ending in 2007, Saint Peter's has surpassed the Annual Fund goal, raising more than $2 million in support of the College. Congratulations to Anna Brown, Ph.D., assistant professor of political science at Saint Peter's College. Faith, Resistance, and the Future: Daniel Berrigan's Challenge to Catholic Social Thought, a book co-edited by Dr. Brown, has been accepted for publication by Fordham University Press. Dr. Brown's chapter, "The Language of the Incandescent Heart: Etty Hillesum's and Daniel Berrigan's Response to a Culture of Death, " will also be included in the book. The book will be released in the spring of 2011.
